Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal, 22 Aug 1910

Lee JEFFERY, 22 years old, committed suicide early Sunday morning by shooting himself through the heart with a 22 caliber revolver. The suicide occurred shortly after 7 o'clock but the body was not found until an hour later. The deed was committed at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Jeffery the parents of the young man on East Market Street. Young Jeffery was employed at the Eaglet restaurant, on N Green St. He arose about 6 o'clock Sunday morning and was seemingly in the best of spirits. He went immediately to his work at the restaurant, which he completed about 7:15 o'clock. He left the rest. about 7:20 and went home, going directly upstairs to his room. His actions were perfectly natural and he did not attract attention. It is supposed that after going to his room he hid himself in the wardrobe, where his dead body was later found. Harmon Wilson, who rooms at the Jeffery home found the body of the young man sitting on a trunk in the wardrobe about 8 o'clock. He had gone to the closet to get some clothes and on opening the door saw Jeffery lying dead upon the trunk. He called excitedly to the members of the family who came rushing into the room. They removed the body from the wardrobe and placed him in on the bed. The young man was dead. Although several members of the family were in the house when young Jeffery killed himself, no one heard the shot fired. It is thought that the young man had been dead about 1/2 hour before his dead body was found in the wardrobe. What caused young Jeffery to take his life is a matter of conjecture. Members of the family and the most intimate of the young man cannot attribute a cause for the deed. Friends and fellow workmen at the restaurant had noticed that he was not in the best of spirits but gave the matter little attention. During the lull in business hours employees at the restaurant noticed that Jeffery would sit at a table in an apparent deep study. Suddenly he would arouse himself and regain his natural happy mood. Some of the rest. employees noticed Jeffery's mood disposition about the middle of the week, while others noticed it earlier. Lee Jeffery was a s/o Mr.,/ Mrs. Wm. Jeffery and was born near Shannondale July 23, 1888. He spent the earlier part of his life there, moving to Crawfordsville with his parents about 10 years ago. After his growth to manhood he was employed at various occupations. The consensus of opinion of his former employees is that Lee was a reliable, straightforward and honest young man. Besides a father and mother, young Jeffrey is survived by 4 brothers and 5 sisters. The brothers are: Howard; Harry; Sherman and French. Sisters are: Mrs. Ella Horn; Mrs. Bertie Zuck; Mrs. Ettie Fry; Mrs. Alice Howard and Miss Elsie.
